Retail store Nickel & Dime has opened its doors in Stirling city centre.
The family business, which is run by Wasif Ahmed with help from his wife Shafah, sells an enormous range of hardware, household goods, homeware and accessories. It is part of an independently run chain of stores which were established by Shafah’s extended family more than 30 years ago.
Nickel & Dime stores, which are based right across Scotland including in Crieff, Arbroath, Fraserburgh, Campbeltown, pride themselves on being a one-stop shop where local people can find all their everyday essentials.
Shafah says: “We lived in Aberdeenshire before we came to Stirling and
moved here because we saw a gap in the market and the opportunity to open our very own Nickel & Dime store in the city. There’s not a shop like us in Stirling city centre so it was the ideal place to open a new store and business has gradually been building up since we opened last October. Wasif is in the store every day and I also help out behind the counter and with the accounts.”
Nickel & Dime, which is based in the former Argos store, opened on October 29 last year. Shafah says: “Business was a little slow when we first opened but the summer has been much busier with lots of local people and tourists coming in. We’re enjoying working hard and building a business and it’s great to see people find the goods they need and help them get products which they can’t buy elsewhere.”
The shop sells an extensive range of affordable goods including car care products, photo frames, wool, kindling, cleaning items, travel adapters, lightbulbs, diaries, lamps, toasters, stationery, toys, candles, gardening essentials, sweets and drinks. Among the most popular products are DIY items such as tools, screws, nails, paints, grout, glue and fillers.
The store also stocks seasonal items such as paddling pools and sledges plus – in the run up to the festive season – Christmas essentials including crackers, wreaths, lights, tinsel, ornaments and artificial trees.
Nickel & Dime is open daily from 9am until 5.30pm Monday to Saturday and from 11am until 5pm on Sundays.
